Product Development Engineer

This individual will participate in the full breadth of the product development process (from concept to transfer to manufacture) for medical devices as part of a tight-knit, highly collaborative team in a fast-paced environment.  We are seeking an individual with a knowledge and love of mechanical and product design to join our team in our Waltham, MA office.

Archimedic is a contract medical device development firm with offices in Philadelphia and Boston areas. We work with technology-driven companies to engineer and build electro-mechanical products for surgical, diagnostic, and drug delivery applications. We offer a creative work environment with a highly collaborative team, passionate clients, and technically challenging projects.  Following are the responsibilities and requirements for the position:


  • Conceive and develop new medical device concepts from initial design to clinical builds
  • Participate in concept stage brainstorms, building proof-of-concept prototypes and developing new technologies
  • Mechanical design of early product concepts, detailed designs and appropriate fixturing, including 3D CAD and mechanical drawings
  • Design and incorporate new methodologies, materials, machines, processes or products in the development process.
  • Work directly with clients, providing design guidance and expertise
  • Conduct feasibility and verification studies to ensure intended device function
  • Participate in risk analysis for products under development
  • Coordinate activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure the delivery of supplies or services needed to meet scheduled timelines
  • Help maintain a team-oriented culture where collaboration and group achievement are valued

  • B.S. or M.S in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering
  • 2-4 years of product design and development experience with M.S.
  • 5-8 years of product design and development experience with B.S.
  • 3D CAD expertise is essential, preferably SolidWorks
  • Experience in medical device product development is highly desirable
  • Flexibility, persistence, resourcefulness, and a drive to succeed
  • Experience in mechanical dimensioning and tolerance for components ranging from machined to injection molded, sheet metal to 3-D printed materials
  • Experience in electronics integration – Motors, sensors, encoders, PCB’s
  • Ability to work with experts in other disciplines on complex electromechanical systems and cross-functional projects
  • Ability to interact with client companies in a professional manner
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements, design controls, and risk management

Provide our clients with comprehensive and actionable solutions to difficult problems. Think creatively and develop novel methods for implementing technologies and inventing new products.  Work within a small, multidisciplinary team to develop new products for the medical device industry.




Must be able to move throughout office and laboratory space, using a complete variety of office equipment and laboratory machinery and tools. Must be able to lift more than 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time. Must tolerate exposure to chemicals found in the Catapult laboratory environment.
