Ultra Compact CPAP Device
Archimedic collaborated withĀ Human Design Medical (HDM) to develop an ultra-compact, ultra-quiet continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) device. For portability and convenience, the device featured a separate powerpack battery module from its powershell CPAP module.
EXPLORING USABILITY AND FORM
Industrial DesignĀ
Archimedic led theĀ industrial design of the Z1 powerpack and powershell modules, and a means of integrating them into a single device. The design process explored usability, form factors, brand placement, color selection, and various materials and textures. A fabric soft good sleeve was developed to improve device handling and comfort surrounding a holster for the modules.
MINIATURIZATION, NOISE ATTTENTATION & MANUFACTURABILITY
Electromechanical Engineering
Archimedic's team of electromechanical engineers miniaturized the electromechanical design through dense component layouts, custom PCB sizing, and housing design. Throughout this miniaturization process, the industrial design intent was strictly maintained. Additionally, the engineering team implemented baffling and noise reduction materials to reduce vibrations and resulting noise. Archimedic refined all parts and assemblies for high-volume manufacturing, including design for injection molding, sheet metal stamping, and compound screen forming.
VERIFYING FUNCTION AND PRECISION
Prototyping & Testing
After the electromechanical design was complete, we produced a series of functional prototypes and performed testing to confirm meeting the key technical requirements. The engineering team then worked closely with the selected contract manufacturing group to transition the design into full-scale production.

Market Impact
The Z1 established a new standard for portable CPAP machines by combining class-leading size, weight, and acoustics. Competitive products at the time were an average of 50% heavier and 1.7 dB louder than the Z1. Its ease-of-use, human-centered design, and low COGs also contributed to its market success.
