Let's Connect
PREVENTING DIABETIC FOOT COMPLICATIONS

Foot Ulcer Detection Smartmat

Archimedic collaborated with Podimetrics to develop a smart mat capable of detecting early onset of foot ulcers in diabetic patients and uploading that data wirelessly using a built-in cellular connection. Foot ulcers have a high probability of infection, making them a leading cause of amputations among these patients, and one of the most expensive complications in medicine.

EXPLORING MATERIALS AND FORM FACTORS

Industrial Design

The SmartMat was used designed to be used by patients in their homes for early detection of foot ulcers. Archimedic explored a variety of forms and materials inspired by wearables, textiles, and consumer electronics that would be suitable for a home-based medtech device.

PACKAGING SENSORS AND DESIGNING FOR RESILIENCE

Electromechanical Engineering

Archimedic's team of electromechanical engineers developed a smart, connected foot mat. High sensitivity sensor arrays were evaluated and selected, with electronics developed to detect and transmit data. This "Remote Temperature Monitoring System" used relative infrared temperature monitoring to detect inflamed tissue. Cellular connectivity was added to transmit the data wirelessly to healthcare providers.

A mechanical chassis was developed to contain the electronics, and removeable soft goods were added to make the device user-friendly. Finite element analysis was done to ensure strength and production-ready engineering was completed, accounting for design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA). A comprehensive documentation package was created to transfer the design to manufacturing.

VERIFYING FUNCTION AND PRECISION

Prototyping & Testing

Archimedic completed iterations of functional prototyping & testing to develop the core technologies and device design to ensure all technical requirements were met. Collaboration with vendors and the manufacturing partner ensured the prototypes worked effectively and were easily made.

DEVELOPING DEVICE SOFTWARE

Firmware Development

Archimedic developed the embedded firmware necessary to drive the sensors & electronics, and to store sensor data. In addition, we developed firmware to interface with the cellular module and transmit that data into the cloud for healthcare providers to access.

REAL WORLD PERFORMANCE

Market Impact

In a recent study the mat detected more than 97 percent of developing ulcers before they were diagnosed at the doctor’s office. The Podimetrics Mat has been successful in the market, already helping thousands of patients.
