What Investors Look For in a MedTech Start-Up
May 22, 2026
What is the number one thing investors look for in a start-up?
"Disruptive technology" and "market opportunity" are table stakes just to get in the room.
What consistently closes deals is the leadership team. Investors are drowning in deal flow — they gravitate quickly toward the people behind the idea.
If you are a MedTech or BioTech start-up looking for capital, one of the most important things you can do is to make sure you have strong individuals in the following roles:
1. CEO — Ideally someone who has taken a company from start-up to exit. Scientific founders often transition to CTO as the company scales. That's not a slight. It's just rare that deep technical expertise and the skills to attract and manage investment exist in the same person.
2. CFO — Often deprioritized early, but arguably the second most critical role. Building an investment strategy requires specialized knowledge even experienced CEOs may lack. For resource-constrained start-ups, a fractional CFO offered equity (with a salary trigger upon closing a target raise) is a smart, common solution.
3. Board of Directors — Investors study this list closely. Industry veterans lend credibility. Ideally, board members are also investors (even if at a modest level).
4. Scientific Advisory Board — The founder knows the technology better than anyone. Independent experts who can validate its strengths as well as honestly assess its weaknesses are essential.
Your technology is exceptional. The market is massive. Make sure you have the team in place to get there.
